Herver country
The Herver Land ( Dutch Land van Herve , French Pays de Herve ) describes a landscape that lies in the north of the Belgian province of Liège and thus in Wallonia . The "Pays de Herve" covers an area of around 450 km² and extends over the area of a good fifteen municipalities, including Aubel, Beyne-Heusay, Blegny, Dalhem, Fléron, Fourons, Herve, La Calamine, Lontzen, Olne, Plombières, Soumagne, Thimister-Clermont, Visé and Welkenraedt.
geography

The region borders in the north on the Voerstreek , in the east on the Hertogenwald and the Belgian Eifel , in the south on the Ardennes and in the west on the Meuse valleys . The area got its name from the town of Herve in the south of the region, which has long been the most important market in the area. While the transition to the Meuse valleys, the Eifel and the Ardennes is very abrupt in the landscape, the Herver Land in the north merges much more smoothly into the Voerstreek and Zuid-Limburg .
Historically, until the French Revolution , the area belonged to the Duchy of Limburg on the one hand , with Herve being the seat of one of the five high banks (alongside Sprimont , Baelen , Montzen and Walhorn ), and on the other hand to the County of Dalhem under the tutelage of the Duchy of Brabant .
particularities
The Herver Land has a very green appearance. The plateau is characterized by small hills 200 to 350 meters high, little wooded areas and mainly pastures and orchards, which are fenced in by typical hedges. The highest point of the landscape is at 354 m OP in an area with water towers, a little west of Henri-Chapelle . In addition to some modern industrial areas on the A3 motorway, there are mainly agricultural areas here. The region is known for its Hervekaas , beyond that for butter apples, pears, cider , apple syrup (partially made with pears, also known as Liege syrup to find), fine meat products as well as the Abbey beer from brewery convent Val-Dieu . An original breed of land fowl , the harsh chicken or marl country fowl , is experiencing a renaissance due to increased interest from hobby breeders. It was recently reintroduced to South Limburg and is now recognized in both Belgium and the Netherlands.
