The Herzberg in the East Hessian district of Hersfeld-Rotenburg is 478.2  m above sea level. NN the highest mountain in the Richelsdorf mountains .

Geographical location

The Herzberg rises 2km southeast of Nentershausen and 1.3 km northeast of Bauhaus (to Nentershausen) attached to the respective hazel lie, 1.8 km northwest of the at the weirs situated Sweet (to Nentershausen) and 3.5 km (each as the crow flies ) west-southwest of the Blankenbach (to Sontra) on the Blanke .

Mining

For centuries, the Herzberg was a focus of mining activities in the Richelsdorf Mountains. The Wilhelm I barite mine was on its southern slope and the Lichtloch copper slate mine and the Schnepfenbusch mine were only a few hundred meters to the west . Since the 1930s there has been a smelter here again, which processed the copper slate and barite. The factory site is now owned by a company that emerged from this smelting operation and which until the very recent past produced pigments for color production here.

Tannenberg Castle

The medieval Tannenberg Castle stands on a mountain spur ( 351  m ) about 900 m north-northwest of the Herzberg summit .
