description

Vegetative characteristics

Hieracium fendleri is an herbaceous plant that reaches heights of growth of 8 to 40 centimeters. The upright stems are covered with fine and coarse 0.2 to 0.5 cm long hair and have a glandular and star-like hairy base.

At the base of the stem there are three to eight, sometimes more basal leaves , while there are no or up to three leaves on the stem. The leaf blade is at a length of 2-7 cm and a width of 1.2 to 4 centimeters elliptical or oval to reversed-lanceolate or lanceolate with wedge-shaped Spreitenbasis and rounded or tapered Spreitenspitze. The spreading margins are whole or serrated. Both the underside and the upper side of the leaf are mostly glaucous and covered with fine and rough hairs 0.1 to 0.3 centimeters long.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to September. The more or less panicle-like total inflorescence usually contains two to five, occasionally more cup-shaped partial inflorescences. The inflorescence shaft is usually star-like, more rarely also hairy glandular. The involucre , which is cylindrical to bell-shaped with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 centimeters, contains 13 to 16, occasionally more on the underside, rough glandular hairy bracts with a more or less pointed tip. The flower heads contain 15 to 30 ray-flowers. The pale yellow to yellowish white ray florets are 0.7 to 1.3 inches long.

The achenes are jug-shaped with a length of 0.5 to 0.7 centimeters. The pappus consists of 50 to 60 straw-colored bristle hairs, which are 0.5 to 0.8 centimeters long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.
