action

In the fantasy state of Bagatello. The foreigner Peter Vogel lives and works there as a simple and humble photographer who was not guilty of anything. Nevertheless, he should be expelled after a change of government due to a remark that was actually well meant but misunderstood by the new finance minister. Vogel is now considered "politically suspicious". After taking the simple wooden bridge over the border river to his home country Lappalien, he doesn't get any further from there, because the Kingdom of Lappalien no longer wants him to enter due to a new regulation. Peter should have had his old citizenship renewed long ago. Since he was stuck, Vogel builds a modest little house on the bridge, in the middle of no man's land, to spend the night. Vogel is now stuck between two worlds: the one that wants to get rid of him and the other that no longer wants to take him back.

The grotesque situation soon escalates and the existence of Peter Vogel threatens to escalate into a state crisis, especially since the unwanted photographer, due to his exposed situation, also witnessed a forbidden romance between Marina, the princess of trifles, and René, the son of the President of Bagatello. becomes. In this tricky situation he also gets to know the happiness of love in the form of the artist Lilly Dore, who is very similar to the princess. His situation changes suddenly when Peter comes into possession of a considerable inheritance. Suddenly both sides want to let him re-enter, because as a potent taxpayer the photographer is of course very welcome. But too much has happened to the hitherto poor eater on the bridge to want to return to one country or another. And so Peter and his Lilly prefer to look for a new, more hospitable home.
