Hippolyte Langlois (born August 3, 1839 in Besançon , † February 12, 1912 in Paris ) was a French Général de division , senator and member of the Académie française .

Life

Langlois was born in Besançon in 1839 as the son of a lawyer. From 1856 he studied at the École polytechnique and then aimed for a military career. During his service in the artillery , he was appointed in 1858 Sous-lieutenant promoted in 1863 to Lieutenant and 1866 for Capitaine . In the Franco-Prussian War (1870/71) he served in Metz and was taken prisoner there. In 1878 he was promoted to commandant , in 1884 to lieutenant-colonel . A short time later, he began teaching artillery tactics at the École militaire .

On October 21, 1888, Langlois was promoted to Colonel . From 1891 he was in command of the 4th Artillery Regiment until he was promoted to Général de brigade on October 9, 1894 and took command of the artillery of the 13th Army Corps, then in 1895 the 17th Infantry Brigade and its subdivisions in Auxerre and Montargis . During this time Langlois was involved in the development of the Canon de 75 mle 1897 field gun .

On November 8, 1898, Langlois was raised to the rank of Général de division and he took over the management of the École supérieure de guerre , which he led until 1901. From 1901 to 1903 he headed the 20th Army Corps in Nancy and when he left active service in 1904 he was a member of the Conseil supérieur de la guerre, to which he had been elected in 1902.

On May 27, 1906, Langlois was elected to the Senate of the Meurthe-et-Moselle department , to which he belonged until his death. On February 9, 1911 he became a member of the Académie Française.
