Hitcher Returns (Original title: The Hitcher II: I've Been Waiting ) is an American thriller from 2003 and a sequel to the thriller Hitcher, the Highway Killer from 1986. Directed by Louis Morneau , the screenplay was written by Molly Meeker , Charles R. Meeker and Leslie Scharf .

action

The action takes place 15 years after the events of the first film. Jim Halsey works as a police officer. He and his girlfriend Maggie travel to Texas , where they want to talk to retired police officer Captain Esteridge about the events. On the way they take a hitchhiker who also calls himself Jim. Jim Halsey throws him out of the car a little later because he thinks the man has a gun with him. After a while, they are stopped by a police officer. A truck stops nearby; the hitchhiker gets out of him and shoots the policeman. Halsey and Maggie flee.

Halsey and Maggie find Captain Esteridge dead in his house. The serial killer reports a murder, hides in the attic of the house and shoots the arriving police officers who Halsey and Maggie believe are the perpetrators. He fatally injures Halsey; Maggie is injured by the cops. She escapes in a car with which she drives the seriously injured Halsey and watches as her boyfriend dies in the desert.

Maggie is overwhelmed by the serial killer and held in an empty water container, but she escapes. A little later she calls the police and says that she would like to meet them. During the phone call, "Jim" murders the two owners of the restaurant. Maggie is arrested after an exchange of fire between Jim and the police. The hitchhiker had previously cut his finger and tossed the rifle to Maggie. He reports Maggie and testifies against her. Since Jim got Maggie to pick up all the murder weapons in the course of time and she also tried several times to flee from the police, she is believed to be the policeman's murderer. She is believed to be mentally confused because she gives the serial killer the name of her late friend "Jim", which is not his real name. On the way to the prison, he forcibly frees her in a police car. Here, too, she then picks up the murder weapon and is discovered by another police officer. "Jim" shoots this one too. In the end, the serial killer is killed by Maggie, who blows up a truck. Maggie also takes the last chance to prove her innocence. The serial killer's motives remain as unclear as the reason why he terrorized Maggie.

Reviews

The lexicon of the international film wrote: "Continuation of a thriller from 1985 (Hitcher, der Highway-Killer"), which makes use of pure effect language, both stylishly and uncritically, with the sub-texts now rather simpler. A corpse-staring film that the viewer hardly allows a breather. "

The film was nominated for the Saturn Award in 2004 in the Best DVD Release category.
