HOAXILLA. The skeptical podcast from Hamburg is a podcast that has existed since 2010 and is moderated by the couple Alexa and Alexander Waschkau . HOAXILLA focuses on modern sagas (urban legends), media, culture and science from a scientific-critical point of view, without taking itself too seriously. The topics are examined from both a skeptical and a socio-cultural perspective. Before moving to Hamburg , the podcast was subtitled The skeptical podcast from Münster .

The podcast was received several times by national media, such as the taz , DRadio Wissen or the skeptic . In 2013, the podcast became even better known through an article published by the dpa in local and national newspapers . Hoaxilla is listed by Bayerischer Rundfunk as one of the "best podcasts worldwide".

Themes and Concept

In the more than 233 published episodes (as of July 21, 2019) topics such as the Amber Room , Nikola Tesla , numbers transmitter , the Somerton man and the conspiracy theories about the deaths of Lady Di , Marilyn Monroe or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart were dealt with . Each episode has the same structure: At the beginning of the episode, the Hoaxmistress tells a so-called "story of the week" of which it is initially left open whether this story is true or not. Then the main topic of the program is dealt with and finally the "story" is clarified.

Origin of name

The name Hoaxilla is explained by both podcasters in interviews as a trunk word from Hoax and Godzilla . In the first podcast episode "Cokelore", Alexander Waschkau explains that the second part of the name comes from an Internet browser ( Mozilla ).

Under the name HOAXILLA Portrait you can find a podcast that was called Skeptoskop until 2014 . It is an interview podcast in which people are questioned who are close to the skeptic movement (or scientific-critical thinking).

HOAXILLA Crime

HOAXILLA Crime are special episodes of the podcast in which historical criminal cases such as Jack the Ripper or the Hinterkaifeck murder case are dealt with in an interesting manner for the audience with experts such as the criminal psychologist Lydia Benecke or the forensic biologist Cornelius Courts . Furthermore, episodes on certain issues are also produced on current occasions, such as when the Satanist murders were treated in the press.

In 2015, the Waschkau couple announced that they would publish significantly more episodes of Behind the Hoax . B. to answer readers' mail and to point out dates.

The HoaX files

Under the title The Hoax files appears in the JMB publishing a book to a focus at irregular intervals, revised in the various subjects of the podcast and have been writing to them acquainting interested people who have no podcasts to hear. The subject chapters are linked by a story in which the laundry rooms play the main role. The story is basically based on reality, but consistently fictional. In the first volume, with the subtitle Horror, Spuk and Bloody Mary , topics such as Slenderman and Bloody Mary to Waverly Hills were dealt with, the second volume deals with the main topic of dangerous dead people and revolves around people like Count Dracula or zombies .

HOAXILLA TV

The magazine HOAXILLA-TV, also moderated by the Waschkau couple, was published on the Internet television portal massengeschmack.tv by the Hamburg journalist Holger Kreymeier from June 2014 to 2018 . Some of the topics from the podcast were taken up and presented again, but exclusive HOAXILLA TV topics were also dealt with. The HOAXILLA-TV project ended with the hundredth episode.
