The Hobbit House is a building built by the wood artist Alois Riederer since 2014 in Hohenthann ( Landshut district ), which is based on the style of the Hobbit houses from the film trilogy The Hobbit . There are controversies between Riederer and the building permit authorities , which are reported on nationwide.

Design

The carpenter and artist Riederer used natural materials for the construction , which were left in their original state as far as possible. Accordingly, the building was gradually built, depending on how the materials were found. Construction began with an old apple tree , which Riderer stabilized while standing in the ground in his garden. Over the years , the work became two-story , the branches of the tree served as a roof structure . Wood and bricks were used as the material for the walls on the ground floor, and differently colored types of clay on the upper floor . The roof was planted with a flower meadow .

Building law

The controversy over building law began with the assessment of whether the work was art or a house subject to building law. Riederer initially built the building without a permit. 2018 he was the District Office Landshut by decision faces a removal order. He submitted a subsequent building application, which was approved by the Hohenthann City Council in April 2019. However, the approval was given under the condition of exclusively private use. Riederer therefore built a fence so that interested parties can only view the building from a distance. However, with the removal order in 2018, the Landshut District Office made it clear that artistic freedom does not undermine building law. The district office was still of the opinion that the building in its current design could not be approved.

In the summer of 2020, the Landshut district office rejected the subsequent building application. Riederer announced that he would take legal action against the rejection. He is supported by the musician and singer Fredl Fesl , the musician and composer Hans-Jürgen Buchner ( Haindling ) and the professional mountaineer and extreme climber Alexander Huber ( Huberbuam ).

Media reception

National and regional media such as Süddeutsche Zeitung , n-tv , ARD and Bild reported on the controversy.
