Hochfeistritz

Hochfeistritz is a village in Carinthia, 989 meters above sea level , at the foot of the Saualpe . It has 85 inhabitants (as of 2001 census) and today belongs to the municipality of Eberstein . The parish and pilgrimage church of Our Lady is dominant , the oldest documented mentions of which date from 1319 and 1383. The original church was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1414; today's building was erected in its place between 1446 and 1491 and expanded into a fortified church in the course of the Turkish wars in the second half of the 15th century . The high weir system served the residents of the Görtschitztal as a place of refuge. The complex has surrounding walls, a gate tower and a wall tower as well as a battlement and loopholes .
