In the course of history there have been numerous floods in Hanover . One of the oldest protective measures is the construction of the Schnellen Graben, mentioned in 1449 . The worst flooding in Hanover to date occurred more recently in 1946, shortly after the Second World War .

Flood disaster in 1946

From February 3 to 9, 1946, after a 14-day period of frost with frozen ground, unusually heavy rains occurred, which coincided with the melting of the snow in the Harz Mountains . As a result, on February 10, 1946, the greatest flood disaster in the history of the city of Hanover occurred. The rivers Leine and Ihme and also the Maschsee overflowed their banks. The flow area of the Ihme, which is narrowed to 900 meters at Waterlooplatz, is reduced to 400 meters at the Glockseebrücke. There, around 700,000 petrol cans were washed ashore from a British depot at Schützenplatz in Hanover , which additionally blocked the drainage of water under the bridges. As a result, 1,666 hectares were flooded to a height of 3 meters, including the districts of Altstadt, Calenberger Neustadt , Südstadt, Linden and Ricklingen. The level in Herrenhausen rose to 6.44 meters, which has not been reached since then. The flood claimed three lives and caused major property damage.

After the flood, there was “uncontrolled removal of historical documents that were then used for heating purposes in the cold winter” in the rooms of the Hanover City Archives . "These losses have caused that the tradition of the city history of the 19th century has been lost to 80%."

As early as the 1950s, extensive safety measures were taken, especially in the construction of the dykes. As a result of climate change and to ward off possible extreme weather events, renovation measures were carried out between 2010 and 2013 in the course of the Ihme on Peter-Fechter-Ufer at the level of the Ihme-Zentrum . On the left bank of the river Ihme, the existing dike in the east of Ricklingen was extended in 2013 and 2014 with a dike adjoining it to the south and a flood protection wall at Michaelisfriedhof .

During the floods in Central Europe in 2013 in May and June, the water levels in Hanover were also high, as heavy rainfall also fell in the Leine catchment area . In the floodplain of the Leine in the Stöcken district , a woman died on May 30, 2013 after being carried away by the current while crossing a flooded street.
