Towers
The sink tower in Hanover is the only visible remnant of the hydraulic engineering facilities of the former city fortifications of Hanover as a drainage marker with its approximately 20 meter long water ferry . The site of the listed complex from the 16th century is Culemannstrasse on the west bank of the Leine at the southern end of the bridge to Friedrichswall .
Description and history
The visible, about 20 meters long, sloping embankment wall on the Leine is only part of the former bastionary defense system at this point in the city. Together with the - today filled in - other half of the stone wall made of ashlars , the barrier with a passage for regulating the water level separated the main arm of the Leine from the Ratsfischteich . This was part of the former city moat between the two arms of the Leine, which formed the former Leine Island Little Venice , and was later buried.
The octagonal Sieltürmchen was the Bähre (also: Bäre ), the water passage with a slice in the turrets for filling or emptying of 1588 established the moat and the subsequent Council pond, set up as architectural decorative Bekrönungspyramide and water side shows construction inscriptions , the coat of arms of the city and high-water marks of the period from 1588 to 1783. The tower top was renewed in 1962.
