The Hohe Wart-Tunnel (also: Tunnel Hohe Wart ) is an 872 m long railway tunnel on the high-speed line Hanover – Würzburg . It is located in the area of the Zellingen market , northwest of Würzburg .

The construction costs according to the accounts (excluding VAT) amounted to 26.6 million D-Marks (around 13.6 million euros ; price as of 1985).

course

The tunnel runs in a north-south direction. The route runs in a straight line in the tunnel. The gradient slopes down towards the south portal at 12.5 per thousand.

At the north portal (construction km 292.041) the upper edge of the rail is at a height of 288.354  m above sea level. NN , at the south portal (construction km 292.925) of 277.304 m. The overburden (over the mountain ridge ) is up to 27 m, at the portals between 10 and 15 m.

To the north of the tunnel, after a short cut, the 411 m long Hanfgartentunnel joins.

geology

The tunnel lies in solid rock of the Upper Muschelkalk . About 18 to 20 m below the tunnel are layers of the Middle Muschelkalk and influence the mountains above with gypsum leaching .

history

planning

In the planning status from the end of 1977, an incision was planned in the area of today's tunnel. No tunnel was planned in autumn 1981 either.

The tunnel, together with a 287 m long pre-cut in the north and a 392 m pre-cut in the south, formed lot 2 of a 2,500 m long construction section (construction km 290.800 to 293.300), which also included the neighboring Hanfgarten tunnel . The section was awarded on September 23, 1983 for an order value of 50,174,800 German marks (around 25.7 million euros ; price as of 1983).

At the end of March 1982, the municipality of Himmelstadt , over whose territory the route in the area of the tunnel runs for 1.7 km, approved the planning approval section without dissenting votes.

In the planning and construction phase, the tunnel, together with the neighboring Hanfgarten tunnel, was also referred to as Object 32 . At the beginning of 1982 a length of 850 m was planned for the tunnel, at the end of 1983 the planned length was 849 m.

construction

Construction began on October 24, 1983. Tunneling, from the north portal to the south, began on April 12, 1984.

The tunnel was ceremonially erected on May 11, 1984.

The dome was knocked through on December 1, 1984 , the bench on December 20 of the same year. From August 27 to September 5, the two tunnels constructed in the construction phase were examined. Construction work was completed on September 27, 1985, and the tunnel was formally accepted on October 8 . The tunnel sponsorship had Christa Elisabeth Berg accepted.

The 884 m long tube (the distance between the two portal base points was measured) was almost completely built using a mining method over a length of 849 m. 35 m in the area of the portal structures were built using the open construction method.

The excavated cross-section was between 108 and 143 m², the usable cross-section between 81 and 99 m². The maximum excavation height (base - apex ) was 11.60 m, the tunnel height ( upper edge of the rail - apex) was 7.78 m. A total of 97,300 m³ of rock was excavated, and 328,500 m³ of material was removed for the cuts and pre-cuts. The excess mass (250,000 m³) was deposited on a landfill near Würzburg; the mean transport distance was 6.0 km. Since the mountain water level was below the tunnel floor, only a maximum of 0.2 l of tunnel water per second was generated during the construction phase .

5,890 m³ of shotcrete was used for the outer vault and 15,325 m³ of concrete for the inner and base vault . A total of 200 t of steel was used to reinforce the inner shell and the portals.

The ARGE Hanfgarten- und Hohe Wart-Tunnel , which consisted of the three companies ILBAU, Leonhard Moll and Hermann Kirchner, was commissioned with the construction .

business

The Hohe Wart transfer point at the south portal of the tunnel formed the southern end of the first completed section of the new line. The preliminary operation began in mid-1986.

During the ICE world record run on May 1, 1988 , the tunnel marked the beginning of a high-speed section of 24.2 km in length (up to 284.4 km) specially designed for journeys over 350 km / h.

technology

The two main signals covering the Hohe Wart transfer point from the north are in the tunnel .
