Hole-in-one

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A hole-in-one or ace in golf means the successful playing of a hole with a single stroke , that is, the "hole" of the tee.

Probabilities

A hole-in-one is very rare; Such a "lucky hit" is appropriately observed and celebrated. According to golf magazine Golf Digest, the chance of an amateur golfer scoring an ace is 1 in 12,750. Figures from the German Golf Association point in a similar direction: In 2007, out of 4.8 million par-3 holes played, a total of 473 hole-in-ones were achieved, which is a probability of 1 in 10,150.

Hole In One Insurance comes up with comparable figures. According to this American insurance, the chance of an amateur is 1 in 12,500, that of a professional golf player 1 in 2,500. The longer the length of the course, the less likely it will be a hole-in-one. Because of this, aces are practically only scored on par 3 holes.

Rituals after achieving a hole-in-one

In amateur tournaments, it is customary to invite everyone to have a drink.

There are special hole-in-one insurances , but the organizers of golf tournaments insure that one or more players actually play a hole-in-one. In the event of a hole-in-one, these insurances cover the costs of the mostly high-quality prices.

For non-tournament leisure rounds, it is the custom in Scotland to play the next round with the same line-up in a tartan skirt .

In golf club houses there are usually lists of all aces that have ever been played on the golf course, and certain magazines also list all officially confirmed aces nationwide in the last month.

Aces are more common among professional golfers because they participate in many tournaments and can play very accurately. In professional tournaments, sponsors often offer a valuable prize (for example a car or a watch) for the player who is the first to achieve a hole-in-one on a certain lane.

Records

  • 2001 saw the first hole-in-one at a par 4 in the history of the US PGA Tour ( Andrew Magee , January 25, 2001 in Scottsdale ). Curiously, the ball was directed into the hole by Tom Byrum's putter . Since the players usually tee off on par 4s while the group in front of them is still on the green , this became possible. A hole-in-one on a par 4 hole also corresponds to an albatross , i.e. a result with 3 strokes below the hole standard. Albatrosses are very rare and are almost exclusively scored on par 5 holes.
  • On August 20, 2016, Wolfgang Huget (Osnabrücker GC) scored a hole-in-one on a par 4 hole (length 305 meters) as part of the team championships of the Lower Saxony / Bremen Golf Association on the Steinhuder Meer Golf Park course .
  • On December 17, 2014, the 103-year-old American Gus Andreone "in all probability" made a hole-in-one on the Palm Aire Clubs course in Sarasota as the oldest player to date. The previous age record was held by the 102-year-old Elsie McLean (April 8, 2007 in Chico, California , with a par 3 over 91 meters).
  • Coby Orr is the youngest player to have a hole-in-one. In 1975, at the age of 5, he scored a hole-in-one over a distance of 100.6 m (110 yards) at the Riverside Golf Club in Grand Prairie, Texas .
  • Probably the first blind golfer to hit a hole-in-one is the American Sheila Drummond. On August 19, 2007, the 53-year-old hit the ball on a par 3 hole in Lehington ( Pennsylvania ) from 132 meters directly into the hole.
  • Graham Marsh hole-in-one twice on the same fairway during the same event. The then 60-year-old Australian achieved this in 2004 during the British Open for Seniors .
  • The blind golfer Leo Fiyalko managed a hole-in-one on January 10, 2008 in Clearwater, Florida . The American was 92 years old at the time and hit the ball directly into the hole from a distance of about 100 meters.
  • One of the most spectacular strokes in golf history was hit by golfer Mike Crean in 2002 at the Green Valley Ranch Club in Denver . On a 466 m long par 5 he punched the ball from the tee with an unusually long drive to a double albatross .
  • Shawn Stefani had an extraordinary first hit at the US Open 2013 when, in an actually unsuccessful shot that landed next to the green, the ball spun back into the green and slowly but surely into the hole.
  • On August 11, 2016, Justin Rose scored the first hole-in-one in an Olympic golf competition on a par 3 hole during the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
