Hollenthon is a dark / symphonic metal band from Vienna , Austria . It was founded in 1994 as a black metal project under the name Vuzem by Martin Schirenc from the death metal band Pungent Stench . It was named after the Lower Austrian town of Hollenthon .

history

In 1994 Martin Schirenc started to build his own small recording studio. Since he wanted to experiment with new influences and combine them with extreme metal, he founded the black metal project Vuzem; he took the name from a leather clothing company. Under this name he recorded the songs From those bloodsuckers and Invocations ; the band was then a member of the Austrian Black Metal Syndicate (ABMS), which also included Pervertum , Trifixion , Amestigon and Abigor . The two songs appeared on the compilation ABMS - Norici Obscura Pars . After a long hiatus, he wrote new material that had little in common with it and changed the name to Hollenthon so as not to risk legal problems. Their first album, Domus Mundi , was released under the new name via Napalm Records . In June 2001 the second album With Vilest of Worms to Dwell was released .

After a seven year hiatus and the end of his main project Pungent Stench, mastermind Martin Schirenc completed his third album called Opus Magnum in 2008, which was also released on Napalm Records in June 2008 and retained the style of the two previous albums. Contrary to the assumption that it dealt thematically with religion, Schirenc emphasized that the text was about humanity and its self-destruction. The use of biblical symbolism gives a different impression, but in fact it is a secular and socially critical topic. While the band could only rarely give concerts before their break due to casting problems, Schirenc announced that he would now perform live as often as possible and want to show that Hollenthon was a real band and not a studio project; announced appearances at numerous festivals such as Graspop Metal Meeting , Waldrock , Brutal Assault and Summer Breeze .

In 2009, also through Napalm Records, an EP called Tyrants and Wraiths was released. In addition to four new songs, there are two live videos from the band's performance at the Graspop Metal Meeting 2008.

In 2010 bassist Gregor Marboe left the band.

style

Hollenthon are stylistically influenced by 1980s metal, classical music , but also by music from the Middle East , church music and folk . The singing varies a lot, from metal- typical growls to Gregorian-like choirs to operatic singing, with male (M. Schirenc) and female (E. Schirenc) voices alternating.
