Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival
The Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival (often abbreviated as "HRIFF") is an American film festival with a special focus on independent films that takes place annually in Hollywood . Venues are the New Beverly Cinema and other cinemas. The festival honored Gérard Depardieu , Peter O'Toole , Frances Fisher and Tinto Brass , among others . Other notable winners and visitors include Jon Polito , John Heard , Rick Shapiro , Hillary Duff , Danny Masterson and Tyler Blackburn .

The festival was founded in 2003 with an emphasis on independent films. Every year the festival shows films in competition and awards winners in various categories during an award gala.
Award of Excellence
Every year the festival awards the "Award of Excellence" during its award gala to one or more people whose work is seen as significant for the film world and whose work is shown during the festival. In recent years the award winners have been:
- 2011 - Gérard Depardieu , "for his performance in Grenouille d'hiver "
- 2012 - Tinto Brass , "for innovations in the visual language of his films of the 1960s and 1970s".
- 2012 - Frances Fisher , "for exceptional contributions to the art of acting in a continually outstanding career."
- 2013 - Peter O'Toole , "for exceptional contributions to the art of acting in a continually outstanding career."
- 2015 - Hugo Niebeling , for "artistic innovations".
- 2016 - Gene Wilder , for "Artistic Innovations".
- 2016 - Dušan Makavejev , for "Ingenuity and creativity in the cinema".
- 2016 - Haskell Wexler , for "Ingenuity and Creativity in Cinema".
- 2017 - John Milius , for "Artistic Innovations".
- 2017 - Warren Beatty , for "Artistic Innovations".
Notable films in the program
- The Act of Killing , which received the "Best Picture" award in 2013, was nominated for an Academy Award in 2014 .
- Bridegroom , for which director Linda Bloodworth-Thomason won the 2013 Best Director category, was funded by crowdfunding on Kickstarter.com and in 2012 held the record for the film with the highest crowdfunding on Kickstarter.
- Drive with Benjamin Schnau premiered at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival in 2017, as reported by Stern magazine.
Retrospectives / special events
- In 2012, the festival held a retrospective of Tinto Brass's early, experimental films. World premieres of the restored versions by Nerosubianco as well as Dropout and La Vacanza , in which Vanessa Redgrave and Franco Nero play the leading roles, were shown.
- In 2012 the film Assault on Wall Street by Uwe Boll premiered at the festival. Boll and actors were present.
- In 2012, the festival showed the world premiere of the newly restored HD version of Manos: The Hands of Fate . Actress Jackey Raye Neyman-Jones was in attendance.
- In 2015 the festival organizes a retrospective of Hugo Niebeling's films .
