Johann Michael Siegfried Lowe , born Moses Samuel Loewe (born June 24, 1756 in Königsberg ; died May 10, 1831 in Berlin ), was a portraitist, miniature painter, engraver and etcher.
Life
Lowe was a student of the Berlin Academy from 1770 to 1774 under Blaise Nicolas Le Sueur , Daniel Chodowiecki and Johann Christoph Frisch . In Dresden he was a student of Giovanni Battista Casanova and Anton Graff . He went on a study trip to Venice and then went to Saint Petersburg , where he is said to have painted Empress Catherine II several times and, according to the documents of the Petersburg Academy, can be traced back to 1788.
Lowe created numerous portraits using various techniques, including a. by August von Kotzebue , Moses Mendelssohn , Johann Albert Eytelwein , Ludwig Heinrich von Jakob and Immanuel Kant , as well as vedutas and book vignettes in the style of Chodowiecki.
Lowe made original engravings for various writings from the Jewish Free School in Berlin . In 1805 he began to publish a series of portraits of now living Berlin scholars with their autobiographies , in which u. a. Portraits of the physician Christoph Wilhelm Hufeland , the astronomer Johann Elert Bode and the Jewish enlightener Lazarus Bendavid have been published.
