Werner Holtfort (born May 25, 1920 in Hanover ; † April 16, 1992 ibid) was a German lawyer , lawyer and social democratic politician .

Life

After participating in the war and studying, Holtfort settled in Hanover in 1955 as a lawyer and notary. He was a member of the board and vice-president of the Celle Bar Association and a member of the federal board of the Humanist Union . In 1977 he resigned from the Hanover Lawyers' Association together with 16 colleagues due to differing views on the role of lawyer.

In 1979 he was the founder and first chairman of the Republican Bar Association . The future Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder completed his legal clerkship in Holtfort's office . Since 1970 member of the SPD , in which he saw himself on their left wing, he was a member of the Lower Saxony state parliament from 1982 to 1990 . Together with the journalist Eckart Spoo and others, he wrote numerous CDU and Ernst Albrecht publications. In 1985, Holtfort co-founded the Adolph Freiherr von Knigge Society in Hanover.

His estate is administered by the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Library in Hanover.

In 2003, the state capital of Hanover named a path in the Zoo district after Werner Holtfort.

Tomb

Werner Holtfort's tomb can be found in the Engesohde city cemetery in Hanover, Department 25 , Gravege number 166–167 . his funeral motto is: In dubio pro libertate ( When in doubt, for freedom).

Holtfort Foundation

The Holtfort Foundation as sole heir is dedicated to legal training and the political struggle for a democratic legal system. In accordance with the provisions of the will, it regularly awards the Werner Holtfort Prize for outstanding achievements in the defense of civil rights.
