The elderberry bark fungus ( Hyphodontia sambuci syn. Hyphoderma sambuci , Lyomyces sambuci , Roger Ella sambuci ) is a common fungal art from the family of Lyozystidenpilzverwandten (Tubulicrinaceae). It has a very large morphological range of variation, a particularly large substrate spectrum and widespread distribution. Since different groups that cannot be crossed with each other have also been observed, a collective species is suspected under the taxon .

features

The fruiting bodies are perennial. They lie completely on the substrate (resupinate) and are firmly attached to it. They are white to cream in color and form areas up to several square decimeters in size. Later they become thin and crusty, which makes them look like a lime paint when viewed from a distance. The surface is, however, bumpy to slightly warty. It is also dull and a little cracked when dry.

The spores are hyaline , ellipsoid in shape and have one to three oil droplets. They are 4.5–7 × 3–4 in size.

Species delimitation

The elderberry bark fungus can be recognized by its preferred substrate through the white, thin coverings.

Ecology and phenology

The elderberry bark fungus can be found in practically all plant communities. It can be found in forests as well as in groves, forest edges, bushes, roadsides, parks and other biotopes.

The fungus lives as a saprobiont on wood and bark. It colonizes barked and barked trunks and branches of living and dead trees and bushes as well as lying trunks, branches and twigs. Sometimes it can even be found on the stems of perennials and grasses from the previous year. The colonized substrates show a considerable spectrum, with elderberries being particularly preferred. In addition to other hardwoods, the fungus can also be found on conifers and shrubs. In addition, it rarely grows on other substrates such as rushes , woody herb stalks or other mushrooms.

The elderberry bark mushroom can be found all year round.

distribution

The elderberry bark mushroom is probably widespread on all continents, where it can be found in the pantemperate to tropical regions. The fungus can be found in the Holarctic as well as in Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand. In the Holarctic it has a submeridional to temperate distribution. Thus it can be found in North America (USA, Bermuda ), Europe (incl. Azores ), North Africa and North Asia ( Siberia , Altai ).

In Europe, the area extends from France and Italy across Central Europe to the Hebrides and Scandinavia and eastwards to Ukraine. In Germany, the fungus is also widespread on the coast and on the islands. In the Alps it can be found up to an altitude of 1,500 meters.
