Geographical location

Honau is located in the Upper Rhine Plain in the city of Rheinau. The Honau district consists to a large extent of alluvial forest and bodies of water, such as the Rhine canal, which is popular for canoeing . In the west and northwest the district borders on the Rhine , where there is also a port.

history

In 720 a Schottenkloster was founded on a Rhine island . It belonged to the diocese of Strasbourg and was incorporated into the Renchen court (Amt Oberkirch ). Until 749, the Etichonen secured the monastery property, which was called "Hoinaugia". Further names over the years were "Hoinowa" (870), "Honaugia" (1119), "Honauwia" (1199) and "Honow" (1268). In 884 the goods were confirmed in over 40 Alsatian communities by Emperor Karl the Dicken . In the 11th century, the monastery was converted into a canons and in 1290 moved to Rheinau on the left bank of the Rhine . In 1398 the monastery was moved from Rheinau to Alt St. Peter in Strasbourg.

The village itself was first mentioned in 1233. Until 1468 the parish of Honau belonged to the villages of Wanzenau and Albertzheim, which are now in France. In 1480 the monastery church and probably part of the village was destroyed by a flood of the Rhine.

During the Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648, 300 farmers from Wanzenau and other places in the area fled to Honau. In addition, Landvogt Reinhard von Schauenburg sent 30 men to Honau to reinforce the “Hanauer Rheinwache”. In 1636 and 1637 the plague also raged in Hanauerland .

In 1675 Honau was occupied by the troops of Marshal Turenne and a Rhine crossing was built.

In 1730 a church was built, after which Prince-Bishop Cardinal de Rohan Honau was raised to an independent parish. During the First Coalition War from 1792 to 1797, Honau was occupied by imperial troops to protect the Rhine border. A battery with 2 guns was set up at the “Scharfen Eck”.

The current church of St. Michael was built in 1845. In 1870 and 1871 the fortress of Strasbourg was shot at by artillery.

In 1944 during World War II , one resident was killed, five houses destroyed and 22 others damaged in a French artillery bombardment .

On July 1, 1975, Honau was incorporated into the new town of Rheinau.
