Life

He was the son of René de Savoie , called the Bastard of Savoien , Comte de Villars , Grand Maître de France , and Anne Lascaris, Comtesse de Tende.

In 1552 he accompanied King Henry II on his journey through Lorraine and in the following year he was involved in the liberation of the city of Hesdin , which was besieged by the Prince of Piémont . On August 10, 1557 he was wounded in the battle of the Battle of Saint-Quentin , but this did not prevent him from providing reinforcements to the city of Corbie , which was besieged by the Spaniards .

In the wake of King Charles IX. he took part in his grand tour of France (Grand tour de France) and organized the gathering of the great France (Assemblée des Grands de France), which took place in Moulins the following year .

He fought with great energy against the Huguenots , for example in the battle of Saint-Denis and in the battle of Moncontour .

In 1540 he married Jeanne Françoise de Foix († 1542), daughter of Alain de Foix and Françoise de Montpezat, Vicomtesse de Castillon, which gave him the Vicomté (vice-county) of Castillon-sur-Dordogne, the baronies of Montpezat, Aiguillon, Madaillon, Sainte-Livrade and some other property. They only had one daughter, Henriette de Savoie-Villars († 1611).

In 1565 Villars was raised to his favor as a branch line of the House of Savoy to the Marquisate .

In 1570 he was appointed lieutenant-général du Roi des Guienne as the successor to Blaise de Monluc .

The king rewarded him for his services by appointing him Maréchal de France in 1571 . After the death of Gaspard II. De Coligny in 1572 he also received his title of "Amiral de France et des Mers du Levant" (Admiral of France and the Levantine Seas).

As lieutenant général du roi in the Guyenne , in 1573 he kept up the military pressure on the Huguenots.

In 1578 he renounced the title of admiral in favor of his son-in-law Charles II. De Lorraine, duc de Mayenne .

The king awarded him on January 1, 1579 the order of a Chevalier d'Ordre du Saint-Esprit .
