Horace L. McBride

Horace Logan McBride (born June 29, 1894 in Madison , Nebraska, † November 14, 1962 in Orlando , Florida) was a lieutenant general in the US Army during World War II . He commanded the American armed forces in the Battle of the Bulge , the Rhineland, and Central Europe.

Career

McBride studied at the University of Nebraska from 1910 to 1911 and attended West Point Military Academy until his university degree in 1916 . Then he was asked a battery of the 347th Field Artillery Regiment of the US armed forces in the First World War to command. During this assignment he took part in the Meuse-Argonne offensive .

After the war he was assistant to the military attachés in Belgium and later in Poland. From 1923 to 1927, McBride taught military science and tactics at Yale University . In 1928 he graduated from the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth . From 1928 to 1932 McBride taught at the Field Artillery School and was then on duty in the Philippines until 1935 . In 1936 he graduated from Army War College and then taught from 1936 to 1940 at Command and General Staff College. From 1940 to 1942 he was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone .

During World War II, McBride commanded the artillery of the 80th Infantry Division from April 1942 to March 1943 and was promoted to brigadier general in May 1942 . He was then given command of this division, which he led in the campaigns in northern France, in the Rhineland and during the occupation of Germany. After the end of the war, he was commanding general of the XX Corps for a few months until it was deactivated in March 1946.

From 1946 to 1947, McBride was in command of the US Forces 9th Infantry Division . In 1950 he was named commandant of the Command and General Staff College, a position he held until 1952. From 1953 to 1954 he commanded the United States Caribbean Command , after which he retired in June 1954.
