The Horn-Linie was a German shipping company based in Hamburg . Until its complete dissolution in 2009, it was mainly active in cargo and refrigerated shipping and also offered cargo ship trips for passengers.

history

Heinrich Christian Horn , a coal merchant, founded the company in Schleswig in 1879 with the purchase of three ships and used them to trade in the North and Baltic Seas . In 1906 the freight shipping company was already one of the largest in Germany with 21 ships. After heavy losses from the First World War , a liner service to the Caribbean was opened in 1920 .

In 1933 Erich Müller-Stinnes acquired shares in the shipping company, which was in considerable difficulty, and thus helped it out of the crisis. In 1934 he and Heinz Horn , the son of the company founder, founded Westindische Schiffahrtkontor GmbH , which became shareholders in all the ships in the Horn line.

After the Second World War and the loss of almost all ships and the administration building, Müller-Stinnes acquired all of Heinz Horn's shares in August 1949 and continued to run Westindische Schiffahrtkontor GmbH as a seaport agency. In 1951 he renamed it Horn-Linie oHG.

Müller-Stinnes also became the general agent for the French shipping company CGT . In contrast, Heinz Horn founds the HC Horn shipping company in the refrigerated freight business until 1969 .
