Horst Groll
Horst Groll (born July 25, 1924 - † April 17, 2017 ) was a German university professor for high frequency and microwave technology .
Life
Groll's parents were the pathologist Hermann Groll and his wife Alice geb. Grim. After schooling in Munich and Würzburg Horst Groll put in the war year 1942, the High School and was shortly thereafter for military service confiscated. He served as a flight observer and navigation instructor. After the war he began studying electrical engineering at what was then the Technical University (TH) and now the Technical University (TU) in Munich , from which he graduated in 1949 as a graduate engineer (Dipl.-Ing.).
With his dissertation "power measurement by means of transistors at high frequencies," he was in 1951 with Professor Meinke for Doctor of Engineering (Dr.-Ing.) PhD . He then became a research assistant at Meinke and at the same time worked for the company Pintsch-Electro GmbH in Konstanz . In 1959 he completed his habilitation in Munich with the thesis "Frequency band compression for the transmission and magnetic tape storage of radar images". After he was appointed adjunct professor in 1965 , in 1967 he became head of the microwave technology department of the chair for high frequency technology at the TH Munich. In 1975 he became a full professor and holder of the newly established chair for microwave technology. He remained so until his retirement in 1993.
Groll supervised numerous diploma and doctoral students and remained closely associated with microwave technology long after his retirement. He was a member of the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) , the Telecommunications Society (NTG, today Information Technology Society ITG), the German Society for Positioning and Navigation (DGON) and other scientific bodies. In 1983 he was the General Chairman of the 13th European Microwave Conference (EuMC) taking place in Nuremberg . He died at the age of 92.
