Horst Holzer (born October 17, 1935 in Wiesbaden , † May 13, 2000 in Munich ) was a German sociologist and university professor. He was one of the most prominent victims of the radical decree .

Life

Holzer studied economics , sociology , political science and psychology at the Universities of Wilhelmshaven and Frankfurt am Main . In 1963 he passed the diploma examination in sociology in Frankfurt . In Munich he was a research assistant at the Institute for Sociology at the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) from 1964 to 1970 . With Karl Martin Bolte he received his doctorate in 1967 with an economics thesis on "Illustrated and Society". In 1968 Holzer and his colleague Conrad Schuhler initiated a pioneering model for the democratic participation of students at his institute . In 1970 he completed his habilitation with a thesis that was later entitled “Failed Enlightenment? Politics, Economy and Communication in the Federal Republic of Germany ”was published.

In 1971 he became Scientific Councilor and C3 Professor at LMU. In the same year he received a call to the University of Bremen , 1972 to the University of Oldenburg , 1973 to the FU Berlin and PH Berlin . None of the calls were received because as a DKP member he was refused employment due to the radical decree. In doing so, Holzer did not allow himself to be located either in his scientific work or in his political actions as a party communist loyal to the line: his texts were never ideology, but always science, and when the GDR authorities expatriated Wolf Biermann in 1976 , he spontaneously voted for one initiated by Wolfgang Abendroth and Günter Wallraff Complaint to the Politburo of the Central Committee of the SED .

The Free State of Bavaria nevertheless initiated disciplinary proceedings against Holzer because of his DKP membership , which, despite public protests (e.g. from the PEN Club ), ended in 1980 with Holzer's removal from his Munich post as professor. Holzer's writings had previously been removed from the university library. The Bavarian Ministry of Culture declared this to be a “long-term loan” in preparation for the administrative court proceedings, but the associated index cards were also removed from the library's inventory catalog. He kept a private lectureship at the LMU, but their attempt to appoint him extraordinary professor in 1994 failed due to resistance from the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs.

In 1977 Holzer held a visiting professorship at the Institute for Literary Studies at the University of Hamburg , in 1977/78 a teaching position at the Technical University of Berlin , in 1978 a teaching position at the University of Bremen and from 1984 to 1995 at the University of Education in Klagenfurt . In 1998 he gave up his private lectureship in Munich, and two years later he died of a heart condition.
