The Hortobágy National Park , in Hungarian Hortobágyi Nemzeti Park , is Hungary's first and largest contiguous national park . It was founded on January 1, 1973 on an area of 52,000 hectares and has been continuously expanded to 82,000 hectares. In 1979 the core with 32,037 hectares became the Ramsar area (wetland of international importance, No. 189 / 3HU008 ). In the same year it was also recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve (52,000 ha, HUN02 ). In 1999 the park was included in the world heritage . In 2011 it was recognized as an International Dark Sky Park (IDSP, in silver) as a light protection area by the International Dark Sky Association , and has since been called Hortobágyi Csillagoségbolt-park ( English Hortobágyi Starry-Sky Park ). This made it the first UNESCO World Heritage Site to also become a light protection area.
