Hoss is the third album by the American punk rock band Lagwagon . It was released on November 21, 1995.

Cover

The cover shows Hoss, a character from the American television series Bonanza , played by Dan Blocker , leaning against a tree. The band logo is shown above. Lagwagon picked the picture because when they made the album they noticed that they were all fans of Bonanza in their youth, and that Hoss was their favorite character on the show. However, since the band did not seek permission to use Dan Blocker's picture, they faced legal action. They finally agreed out of court that they could continue to use the cover if they donated part of the proceeds from the album to a charity.

album

Hoss is considered to be the album with which Lagwagon became internationally known. The music style sounds similar to Trashed , but on their third album Lagwagon deviates a little from their fast, hectic and more pop-punk- oriented style and the entire album sounds more rocky.

In contrast to its two predecessors Duh and Trashed , Hoss was not produced by Fat Mike at West Beach Studios in Hollywood . The album was produced by Ryan Greene in the High Street Studio in San Francisco, who was also responsible for the following album Double Plaidinum and who accompanied the band's stylistic development in the sound .

Shortly after the recordings for Hoss, drummer Derrick Plourde left the band, but remained friends with the members.

reception

Allmusic's Mike DaRonco wrote that Lagwagon wanted to be taken more seriously on Hoss without being placed in the category of a Fat Wreck band. With the album, the band had grown significantly in maturity. He gave four out of five stars. On the page punknews.org the album was described as "one of the outstanding punk records of the last ten years". The rating was five out of five stars. In a review in the music magazine Visions , Joachim Hiller judged that Lagwagon and Hoss clearly stand out from the crowd of melodic punk bands and that the album manages to "tear him out of his lethargy" .
