Hovhannes Bedros XVIII. Kasparian , also Johannes Petrus XVIII. Kasparian ( Armenian : Յովաննէս Պետրոս ԺԸ. Գասպարեան; * January 20, 1927 in Cairo ; † January 16, 2011 in Beirut ), was the eighteenth Armenian Catholic Patriarch of Cilicia and Armenia from 1982 to 1998 .
Life
After training at the Armenian Catholic Patriarchal Institute in Bzommar ( ICPB ), Jean Kasparian was ordained a priest on April 13, 1952 . In 1972 he was appointed bishop of the Baghdad Archeparchy of the Armenian Catholic Church by Pope Paul VI. He was ordained bishop in February 1973 by the Patriarch of Cilicia Iknadios Bedros XVI. Batanian ; Co- consecrators were Georges Layek , Archbishop of the Aleppo Archepark , and Raphaël Bayan , Bishop of the Iskanderiya Eparchy . Kasparian held this office until 1982 when he became the new Patriarch of Cilicia and thus headed the Armenian Catholic Church until 1998.
Pope John Paul II appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for the Interpretation of Legal Texts in 1991 .
Kasparian died on January 16, 2011 at the age of 83 in a Beirut hospital. Kasparian, who suffered from Parkinson's and Alzheimer's , was admitted there several days before his death. He was buried in the Armenian Catholic monastery of Bzommar near Beirut.
