How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today is the third studio album by the American band Suicidal Tendencies . It was released on Epic Records in September 1988 .

Origin and style

After a temporary break, the band regrouped in 1988 for How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can't Even Smile Today . For the first time the punk elements took a back seat in favor of a sound oriented towards speed metal and thrash metal , sometimes with quite complex breaks . New to the band was rhythm guitarist Mike Clark , who had previously played in Mike Muir's side project No Mercy . He was very involved in the songwriting and was responsible for the music of six pieces. Another three pieces came from ex-bassist Louiche Mayorga .

reception

Allmusic's Steve Huey called the album "one of the best releases" by the band. Muir's self-analysis and social comments are as absolutely irresistible and amusing as ever. He awarded 4.5 out of five stars. Thomas Kupfer wrote in Rock Hard that the “Heavy Metal elements are unmistakable on the new record, but the compositions sound much more mature and colorful than in earlier days. In any case, you don't have to be a great prophet to give the suicidal tendencies brilliant future prospects with How Will I Laugh Tomorrow , because with songs like 'Trip at the Brain' (the first single), the title track or 'Surf and Slam' you have made it to create an independent style that I would roughly describe as 'cultivated hardcore'. ”He awarded 8.5 out of ten points. The magazine also included the album in its 2009 list of "250 Thrash Metal Albums To Know".
