Join the Army is the second studio album by the US band Suicidal Tendencies . It was released on Caroline Records in June 1987 . It is considered to be one of the most famous crossover albums between hardcore and thrash metal and a genre classic. Possessed to Skate also became a hymn of skate punk .

Origin and style

It took four years from the debut Suicidal Tendencies to the next album release, as the band had a hard time finding a label due to their reputation - for example, they were banned from performing in Los Angeles . Finally, Suicidal Tendencies were able to sign with Caroline Records . Only Mike Muir and bassist Louiche Mayorga remained from the original line-up , who also wrote most of the songs on Join the Army . On the album, influenced by guitarist Rocky George , the metal elements increased compared to the debut , which put off some hardcore fans. The course towards metal was continued with the following albums until the early 1990s. The album peaked at number 100 on the Billboard 200 .

reception

Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia described the album as a "transition album" from hardcore to thrash metal. Except for a few good moments like Possessed to Skate and War Inside My Head , the album was badly written, badly played and horribly produced. It awarded three out of five stars. Rock Hard magazine included the album in its 2009 list of "250 Thrash Metal Albums That You Should Know".
