The Howe Sound Queen is a former ferry of the Canadian shipping company BC Ferries .

history

The ferry was built under the hull number 306 at the Marine Industries shipyard in Tracy , Québec . The completion took place in March 1964. The ship was initially used as Napoleon L in ferry traffic over the St. Lawrence River .

In 1971 BC Ferries bought the ferry and renamed it Howe Sound Queen . She was initially used by BC Ferries between Horseshoe Bay and Bowen Island . Since 1992 the ferry has operated on the route between Crofton on Vancouver Island and Vesuvius on Saltspring Island . At the beginning of June 2019 it was decommissioned and replaced on the route by the Quinitsa ferry built in 1977 .

Due to the age of the ferry, maintenance and modernization measures had to be carried out again and again at the beginning of the 21st century. In 2004 the engine was replaced and the ferry was equipped with a modern rescue system. In 2007 the passenger area was modernized. In 2016 the ferry was overhauled again so that it could continue to operate until 2019.

The ferry was auctioned for CAD 210,000 in April 2019  .

The ship is named after Howe Sound , a bay northwest of Vancouver .

Technical specifications

The ship is powered by two DDA / MTU - Diesel engines : driven (type 12V2000). The motors act on two propellers via gears . Two generators powered by Mitsubishi diesel engines (type: 6D16 NA) are available for the power supply. The emergency power supply is ensured by accumulators.

The ferry has a continuous vehicle deck. This was originally mostly open at the top and only partially covered on one side by the superstructure with the wheelhouse . In the 1970s, the ferry was extensively rebuilt and the vehicle deck in the middle area of the ferry was completely covered with new deck structures. The passage height is 4.6 meters. There are around 317 lane meters available on six lanes on the vehicle deck  . The ferry can carry 52 cars and is approved for a total of 300 people.
