The main train station is located in the western part of the city of Hradec Králové on Riegrovo náměstí (Rieger Square), which was formerly called Ulrichovo náměstí . The large forecourt is accessible through inner-city road connections. The public transport of Hradec Králové ensures the connection of the train station with several lines. In its vicinity, a few meters to the west, is the national bus station . The station area takes up a very large area of this district.

history

Between 1855 and 1857 the first station building was built in Königgrätz . It was a two-story structure. At that time Königgrätz was on the south-north German connection line , the section of which Pardubitz– Josefstadt was opened to traffic on November 4, 1857. Between 1873 and 1875, the ongoing construction of the Austrian Northwest Railway with the Prague- Mittelwalde route resulted in a supraregional railway cross. The associated rapid development of passenger and freight traffic required further structural additions to the station area until 1894. Between 1897 and 1900, further extensions had to be made in the station area. In 1902, a new administration building was built on the station grounds. Major modifications to the entire area, which roughly correspond to today's extent, were carried out between 1924 and 1925. In the years 2007 to 2009 the city of Hradec Králové initiated a complete renovation and restructuring of the station square.

The station building is an elongated monumental building in the Pražské předměstí (Prague suburb). The design of the building complex comes from Václav Rejchl , who worked out his plans for it between 1928 and 1929. In June 1929 the excavations for the foundations began and from May 1930 the building construction could begin. On May 5, 1935, the city and the railway company celebrated the inauguration of the new station building.

During the six-year construction period, two elongated station buildings were erected, each of which touches one of the ends and in this area includes a 46-meter-high tower. The left wing of the building is primarily used for travelers' stay and service. The main part of the administration rooms is housed in the right wing of the building. The complex is 152 meters long. Its base area encloses an area of around 5000 square meters.

The most noticeable part of the building is the tower, which has a flat floor plan. In its front there is a vertically arranged ribbon of windows that connects to a large clock at its upper end. Above this, the tower tapers to form an even slimmer structure with a mast.

A special feature is the large group sculpture on the roof of a side elevation at the head of the left-hand station wing. This bronze work is by Josef Škoda and is intended to demonstrate the contribution of the railway to the development of human society. The group sculpture consists of a hemispherical globe on which an impeller rests, which is accompanied on both sides by two running torchbearers.

When they were built, these buildings were among the most modern station buildings in Europe. Václav Rejchl had implemented this project with his younger brother Jan Rejchl , also an architect. The construction engineer František Komárek from Svobodné Dvory , a northern suburb of the city at the time, was responsible for the technical implementation of the construction .
