Hubert Janitschek (born October 30, 1846 in Opava ; † June 21, 1893 in Leipzig ) was an Austrian art historian.

From 1868 to 1873 he studied at the University of Graz . During this time he was also a critic and made friends with Peter Rosegger . From 1877 he was in Italy and then curator at the Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna. He completed his habilitation in art history at the University of Vienna in 1878 and became an associate professor in Prague in 1879 . In 1881 he became a full professor at the University of Strasbourg , where he was also custodian of the painting gallery there, initiated by Wilhelm von Bode . In 1891 he became a professor at the University of Leipzig . In December 1892 he was accepted as a full member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences .

He dealt with Leon Battista Alberti and the Renaissance and with the pre-Romanesque . In 1890 he introduced the term Ottonian art , which was palpable not only in architecture but also in book illumination (based on preliminary work by Johann Dominik Fiorillo , Franz Kugler , Gustav Waagen ). He left it open whether the period of Ottonian art ended at the beginning or the end of the 11th century; his Strasbourg colleague Anton Springer spoke out in favor of the middle of the 11th century.

His students included Georg Dehio , Aby Warburg , Paul Clemen and Wilhelm Vöge .

He was married to the writer Maria Janitschek since 1882 .
