Hubertus Michael Erlen (born June 7, 1943 in Troppau ) is a German manager.

Erlen was born in 1943 in Troppau to Silesian parents and grew up in Dresden until 1955 and then in Cologne after the war. After graduating from high school in 1964 and a six-month technical internship in Cologne, he went to study in Berlin.

Career

Erlen studied process engineering and business administration at the Technical University of Berlin . After receiving his doctorate in 1971, he joined the pharmaceutical company Schering AG in Berlin. There he worked in various management positions in Berlin, Nuremberg and the USA. In 1985 he became a deputy board member and a full board member the following year. For many years he was responsible for production, human resources and business in the USA. In April 2001 he was appointed chairman of the board.

In 2002, on his initiative, Schering AG founded the Schering Foundation , which today is the only bearer of the traditional name Schering. Erlen has been Deputy Chairman of the Foundation's Board of Trustees since 2002.

After Bayer AG took over the company in 2006, he became Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Bayer Schering Pharma AG until 2012 .

From 2004 to 2006, Erlen and 16 other top managers were involved in the Partner for Innovation initiative under the direction of Federal Chancellor Schröder .

Erlen was the first CEO of a DAX company to report his salary in 2004. Also in 2004 he brought Karin Dorrepaal, the first woman to the board of directors of a DAX company.

In 2009, Erlen was appointed Deputy Chairman of the Steering Council for the Germany Fund by the Federal Government . He performed this task on a voluntary basis until the end of the Germany Fund 2011.

From 2003 to 2013 Erlen was chairman of the foreign trade committee of the BDI industrial association and from 2007 to 2012 chairman of the foreign trade committee of the European business association BusinessEurope .

Erlen was and is a member of the supervisory boards and advisory boards of various companies. For example, he was a member of the board of trustees of the Bertelsmann Foundation , was deputy chairman of the Schering Foundation and chairman of the Robert Koch Foundation for ten years .

Private

Erlen is married to Anna-Maria Erlen and has two children. As an opera lover, he likes to travel to performances in European operas. He is an active sailor, mountain hiker and skier.
