Hugo Ellenberger

Hugo Ellenberger (born February 5, 1903 in Vienna ; † March 18, 1977 there ) was a popular educator, writer and professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna . He designed radio programs and was the most popular Viennese public educator of his time, including at the Vienna Urania .

Hugo Ellenberger studied German literature and history, geography and psychology (the latter with Karl and Charlotte Bühler ) at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate. phil. First he taught at high school, then he was involved in popular education for more than 40 years.

During the National Socialist era , Ellenberger was a member of the NSDAP and taught at the Napola National Political Education Institute in Vienna , an elite school for the training of the next generation of National Socialist leaders. Furthermore, he taught at numerous adult education centers, including the adult education center Alsergrund, whose course instructors, speakers and staff were only staunch supporters of the Hitler regime at the time. Nevertheless, Ellenberger was not considered a reliable party member at the time of National Socialism.

In 1945 Ellenberger was appointed professor. From 1959 he had lectureships in cultural history at the University of Applied Arts and the University of Music and Performing Arts. Ellenberger became widely known as a lecturer at Vienna Adult Education Centers , above all at the Vienna West Adult Education Center, which he was instrumental in founding in May 1946.

Even in the interwar period, he had organized Vienna tours and joint museum visits in private and was also (until 1935) as co-editor of the national conservative-oriented, in Adolf Luser published Publisher magazine Vivid seal - Austrian monthly magazines for German literature emerged (co-editors were Hans Bruneder and Adalbert Schmidt ). Ellenberger's first Sunday tour as part of the "Vacation in Vienna" campaign he initiated was aimed at Heiligenstadt and its Beethoven memorials in autumn 1946. Visits to museums, galleries, churches, parks, cemeteries, but also to modern businesses followed.

Hugo Ellenberger died at the age of 75 and was buried on March 24, 1977 at the Grinzing cemetery . Hugo Ellenberger's estate is with the Austrian Adult Education Center .
