Hugo Friedrich "Fritz" Maria Freiherr von Habermann (born September 9, 1899 in Landshut ; † January 30, 1981 in Murnau ) also Hugo von Habermann the Elder. J. named to him by his uncle and painter Hugo von Habermann the Elder of the same name . Ä. , 1849–1929, was a German painter . He was a longstanding and important member of the Munich New Group .

Life

He was born as the son of Gustav Joseph Hugo Karl Freiherr von Habermann (* May 8, 1854 in Dillingen ; † August 9, 1919 in Unsleben , Lower Franconia ) and his wife Gabrielle Freiin Schenk von Stauffenberg (* December 4, 1869 ) in Landshut an der Isar born.

After the First World War he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich for five years. His teachers were Professor Gröber and Professor Hugo von Habermann the Elder. Ä. , his uncle. From 1930 to 1940 he lived in Berlin. From 1945 (next to the family seat in Unsleben, where he is buried) his place of residence was Munich again until the end of his life. In 1949 von Habermann joined the Munich New Group . Together with this artists' association, of which he was a long-time board member, he exhibited regularly at the Haus der Kunst in Munich.

In 1966 he received the water lily price of the city of Munich and in 1969 the Bavarian state recognized his work with a grant for the Villa Massimo in Rome. In 1971 the Federal President awarded him the Cross of Merit, First Class. The Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen and the Städtische Galerie Würzburg own pictures by Hugo von Habermann.

In the 60s and 70s he led a painting class at the adult education center in Munich for a long time. A number of his former students joined the Spirale Secession association.

Hugo von Habermann the Elder J. was a member of the German Association of Artists , in whose 29th annual exhibition in Nuremberg he took part in the year he died.
