Huron is a city in Erie County , Ohio , United States . The population was 7,149 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south bank of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Huron River, Ohio , 70 km west of Cleveland .

The Huron area was settled in 1792 and the place was officially established in 1809. Port facilities were built in the 1820s and there have been important shipyards in Huron since the 1830s . With the railway network through the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway and new docks on the east bank of the Huron River, the port developed into an important transshipment point from 1884. Iron ore and limestone are still loaded today .
