The ifeu - Institute for Energy and Environmental Research Heidelberg GmbH (IFEU) was founded in 1978 by scientific staff at Heidelberg University with the aim of enabling independent research on environmentally relevant topics. The IFEU was one of the first self-governing and self-determined research institutes in Germany. The institute, which is recognized as a non-profit, is based in Heidelberg and has a branch in Berlin and has around 70 employees (as of 2013). The chemist and co-founder Ulrich Höpfner was a board member and managing director of IFEU between 1978 and 2009. Currently (as of 2015) Andreas Detzel, Lothar Eisenmann and Martin Pehnt are managing directors.

The sister institute is the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IEER).

Fields of work and clients

The fields of work include (as of 2013) the following areas: waste management, education & information, energy, industry & emissions, biomass & food, sustainability, life cycle assessments, risk assessment, EIA & SUP as well as transport & environment.

IFEU's clients include international institutions, federal and state authorities and ministries, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations , the European Environment Agency , the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety , the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology , the Federal Environment Agency and the Baden-Baden Ministry of the Environment. Württemberg . In addition, there are consulting services for municipalities or well-known companies such as Deutsche Shell AG , Volkswagen AG or Deutsche Bahn , for which the IFEU u. a. technical support and database for the first Internet environmental balance calculator "UmweltMobilCheck" provided. The environmental car list of the VCD is based on a study conducted by the IFEU. Other clients are trade associations, non-governmental organizations (such as WWF ), schools, municipal utilities and transport and logistics service providers. Numerous projects have been or are being funded by the EU .

Development of the subject areas and exemplary research projects

As early as 1978, when it was founded, the IFEU caused a nationwide sensation with a radio-ecological report on the Wyhl nuclear power plant , which the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission also dealt with . Further research assignments in the field of nuclear energy followed, for example for the then German Ministry for Research and Technology , but also on other environmentally relevant topics, such as the connections between air pollution and forest death . Later, for example, the subject area of the environment and traffic was added, so in the mid-1980s the IFEU Institute took specific positions in the discussion on the speed limit on German roads. As a result, the IFEU also turned to the then new topic of life cycle assessment . In this context, reports were created for companies such as Bertelsmann or Duales System Deutschland .

Beate Weber , then Lord Mayor of Heidelberg, stated on the 20th anniversary of the foundation in 1998: “[...] 20 years of ifeu - that is something very special. On the one hand, it documents the successful path taken by scientists from university to self-employment, at a time when there was generally no talk of this. On the other hand, the history of ifeu cannot be separated from the development of environmental policy and the environmental movement in Germany. "

A life cycle assessment study carried out by the IFEU in 2004, which compared non-returnable PET containers with reusable glass packaging, was the largest and most comprehensive scientific study in this area worldwide to date. Electromobility is one of the topics examined by the IFEU . In the area of waste management in particular, the IFEU Institute, together with experts from other disciplines, supported the Federal Environment Ministry and the Federal Government's Interministerial Committee on Sustainable Development in the development and selection of sustainability indicators . The "KlimaNet" Internet service, which was created by the IFEU Institute on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Environment and Transport and aimed at schools, was officially recognized as a decade project by the UNESCO Commission for the UN Decade of "Education for Sustainable Development" in 2005 .

The IFEU is one of the seven pioneering sustainability research institutes that joined forces in 2011, the Ecological Research Network (Ecornet) (with Ecologic Institute , IÖW , ISOE , Öko-Institut , UfU and Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy ). In addition, it is one of the institutes that has accompanied the Ecology Yearbook , which has been published annually since 1992 .
