action

The young writer Jennifer Hills drives to a remote vacation home in New England to write her first novel. During her stay there, however, a group of unscrupulous men become aware of Jennifer. The men devise a plan to rape Jennifer. In the course of this action they ambush the young woman, chase her through the forest, torture, beat and rape her several times and ultimately want to kill her. However, the mentally retarded Matthew does not carry out the murder - which his accomplices want to encourage him to do. The victim then decides to take revenge on each of his tormentors through deadly vigilante justice. She lures Matthew to the island and hangs him. She castrates Johnny and bleeds him to death in the bathroom. She kills the remaining two, Andy and Stanley, with an ax and a boat engine. Then she drives off in the boat.

controversy

The film attracted the attention of the protection of minors and censors around the world, mainly because the multiple rapes of the leading actress were shown in a terrifyingly clear manner. Compared to Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left , which is also considered a rape-and-revenge film, I spit on your grave was often criticized for “celebrating” the rape scene instead of “staging” it, as in The last house on the left should be the case. In addition, the issue of vigilante justice, which is presented as the only means of conflict resolution, and its brutal implementation in Germany led to a nationwide seizure according to Section 131 of the Criminal Code . The character development from victim to avenger was also criticized at I spit on your grave , because this topic is dealt with too briefly.

Reviews

  • “A work that can hardly be surpassed in terms of meanness” - “The worst films of all time”, ISBN 3-89602-514-7 .
  • "A vile bag of garbage [...] Attending it was one of the most depressing experiences of my life. [...] The story of 'I Spit on Your Grave' is told with moronic simplicity. These horrible events are shown with an absolute minimum of dialogue, which is so poorly recorded that it often cannot be heard. “ A disgusting sack of rubbish. [...] To look at it was one of the most depressing experiences of my life. [...] The story of "I spit on your grave" is told with debilitating simplicity. These horrific events are shown with an absolute minimum of dialogue, which is so poorly received that it is often impossible to understand. - Film critic Roger Ebert .
  • “The bottom line is that the film 'I Spit On Your Grave' by no means represents entertainment in the usual sense of the term - and yet this film is anything but a garbage product. But censors are known to act according to an old proverb that says: 'If you can no longer bear your own reflection, you will smash the mirror'. ” - DVDForum.at.
