Idan Maimon ( Hebrew עידן מימון, Born November 27, 1974 in Rechovot ) is an Israeli handball trainer and former handball player from Hapoel Rischon LeZion . Maimon is Israel's record international player, was captain of the Israeli national team for eleven years , is the record goalscorer of the Ligat ha'Al and is considered one of the most important handball players in his country.

Career

Idan Maimon started playing handball in Rishon LeZion at the age of seven. The left-hander played in the club's first team at the age of 16 and won the double in his first two first division seasons in 1989/90 and 1990/91 . Numerous other championships and cup wins followed in the 1990s.

After seven doubles in a row from 1993 to 1999 and at the peak of his career up to then, Maimon became the first Israeli handball player abroad for the 2000/01 season. With Frisch Auf Göppingen he won the southern season of the German 2nd Bundesliga and was involved in the club's promotion to the first division after twelve years of abstinence. Maimon then moved to the Swabian competitor VfL Pfullingen and played another season in the 2nd Bundesliga . He also won the championship in the second division with VfL Pfullingen, combined with promotion to the top German division. Since he returned to Israel after the end of the season, Avishay Smoler only became the first Israeli handball player in the German Bundesliga years later .

For the 2002/03 season Maimon rejoined his hometown club Hapoel Rischon LeZion. Further Israeli championships (2003, 2004, 2008, 2013, 2015) and cup wins (2012, 2015) followed. In October 2013, Maimon surpassed the league record of 2923 goals, previously held by Akiva Lefler . He scored his 3000th goal in the Ligat ha'Al on February 6, 2015 in the game against Maccabi Tel Aviv (30:28). At the end of his career, Maimon had more than 3500 goals.

Internationally, Maimon could not celebrate any great successes with Hapoel Rischon LeZion. The club only qualified for the Champions League in the 1997/98 and 1999/2000 seasons. The greatest success was reaching the quarter-finals in 1999/2000 , in which the team narrowly failed against the later finalist THW Kiel .

Maimon made his national team debut at the age of 18. He was a total of eleven years captain of the Israeli team, with which he could not qualify for World Championships or Olympic Games. The greatest success was participation in the 2002 European Championships in Sweden. After defeats against Portugal (15:26), Russia (26:27) and Denmark (26:29), Israel was eliminated after the preliminary round. In total, Maimon played 168 international matches and scored 636 goals.

In the middle of the 2015/16 season and immediately before the cup semifinals against ASA Tel Aviv , Hapoel Rishon LeZion overtook the resignation of the Serbian coach Damir Stojanović . Maimon, now 41 years old, agreed to take over the team as player- coach . Not least because of increasing health problems, he ended his career as an active player in the summer of 2016 and has been the head coach of Hapoel Rischon LeZion ever since. In the 2017/18 season he won the championship and cup double with the team.

Idan Maimon is married and has three children.
