Ignaz Franz

Ignaz Franz (born October 12, 1719 in Protzan near Frankenstein , Duchy of Münsterberg , † August 19, 1790 in Breslau ) was a German Catholic priest , theologian and hymn poet .

Life

Franz studied philosophy and theology at the University of Breslau . After successful graduation and the obligatory preparation time he received in 1742 by prince bishop Philipp Ludwig von Sinzendorf the priesthood . Immediately afterwards he was sent to Großglogau as a chaplain .

In 1753 Franz was appointed archpriest and called as such to Schlawa . In 1766, Count Philipp Gotthard von Schaffgotsch brought him back to Breslau and appointed him rector of the episcopal alumnate ( seminary ) of Breslau. At the same time he worked as an assessor for theological affairs of the apostolic vicariate .

Franz died eight weeks before his 71st birthday, on August 19, 1790, in Breslau, where he also found his final resting place.

Works

Franz acted as the editor of catechisms and hymn books in the spirit of the Enlightenment . He is the poet of the hymn Great God, we praise you ( GL 1975 257, GL 2013 380, EG 331 and Whitsun Jubilation, song number 20). It is a German adaptation of the Te Deum , the Ambrosian hymn of praise. Great God, we praise you was written around 1770. The later melody was first published in the Catholic hymn book (Vienna 1776).
