Ignaz Stahl (actor)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ignaz Stahl (born October 20, 1790 in Vienna ; † January 10, 1862 there ) was an Austrian actor , contemporary of Johann Nestroy , Wenzel Scholz , Alois Grois and, like them, mainly engaged in folk plays and antics on what was then Vienna's suburban stages.

Life

There is little biographical information about Ignaz Stahl. In a collection of 15 of his letters he is described as a popular actor, often mocked because of his good-naturedness and who has died completely penniless. In the Biographical Lexicon of the Kaiserthums Oesterreich (1856-1891) of Constant von Wurzbach he is described as:

“[...] one of the most grotesque characters in stage life, who are disappearing more and more with the reforms of today's theater; without wanting to, often a source of inextinguishable cheerfulness and a person who is good at heart and, wherever he showed himself, popular ”.

Johann Nestroy wrote some roles for him in his works:

His grave is in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof (group 1) in Vienna-Landstrasse .
