Ignaz Stich

Ignaz Stich (born April 28, 1863 in Fahndorf ; † August 15, 1926 in Wierter ) was an Austrian librarian and local politician ( CS ).

Life

Ignaz Stich was born the son of a landowner and butcher. After graduation at Schottengymnasium in Vienna he started at the University of Vienna with the study of the science of history , which he in 1885 with the thesis " About the Convention to Nice and the meeting in Aiguemortes 1538 " and passing the required Rigorosen as Dr. phil. completed. During his studies he joined the Catholic student association Austria Wien in 1881 and was later chairman of their old gentlemen's association for many years .

From 1889 he was Amanuensis at the University Library of the University of Vienna and in 1892 moved to the University Library of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna , of which he was director from 1894 to 1919. In this function, he played a major role in the upgrading of this library by re-cataloging the holdings, taking into account a scientific system, and by increasing the budget.

In 1899, Stich founded the catholic public library “ Volkslesehalle ” as a Christian - social counterpart to the libraries of the social democratic Viennese people's education association, of which he was president until his death.

He was involved in local politics as a member of the municipal council of Vienna- Währing and from 1906 to 1919 influenced the building regulations and the transport system in the cottage district of Währing.

As a member of a delegation that accompanied the Mayor of Vienna on an information trip to London in October 1912 , he was particularly interested in living conditions.

After the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy , Ignaz Stich resigned from civil service and resigned from Währing's municipal council.

From 1915 to 1925, Stich was chairman of the Wiener Cottage Verein and from 1921 until his death in 1926 he was mayor of Wierter. The Dr.-Ignaz-Stich-Platz in Wierter is named after him.

Ignaz Stich left a widow and 4 children and was buried in the St. Andrä cemetery.
