Igor Nikolaevich Khmelnov

Igor Nikolajewitsch Khmelnow ( Russian Игорь Николаевич Хмельнов ; born January 31, 1945 in Ulan-Ude ) is a Russian admiral a. D. and former Chief of Staff of the Russian Naval Fleet . From 1994 to 1996 he was the commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet .

Life

Khmelnov began to work as a porter and later as a riveter at the age of 14 . He then worked as a technologist and designer in an aircraft factory. After graduating from a mechanical engineering school in evening courses, he began studying at the Pacific Naval Officer College SO Makarow in 1964 , which he graduated in 1969 and then served as a navigation officer in the Northern Fleet on the destroyer Otmenny . In 1973, Khmelnov completed commanders' courses in Leningrad and was subsequently employed as first officer on the destroyer Okryljonny . From 1976 to 1979 he commanded the destroyers Gremjaschi and Gromki .

From 1979 to 1981 he studied at the Naval War Academy and after graduation became chief of staff of a missile ship brigade of the Operative Atlantic Squadron of the Northern Fleet. In 1984 he took command of a destroyer brigade and in 1987 became Chief of Staff of the Operative Squadron. After 20 years of service in the Northern Fleet, Khmelnov was promoted to Commander of the Pacific Fleet Operational Squadron and promoted to Rear Admiral in 1988 . In 1993 he had the rank of Vice Admiral , was appointed 1st Deputy Commander and the following year himself appointed Commander of the Pacific Fleet. In this position, Khmelnov, who was now appointed admiral, worked until February 1996. From then on he headed the main staff of the Russian naval fleet.

In 1997, the Russian Defense Ministry accused four high-ranking military officers, including Khmelnov, of abuse of office and applied to President Yeltsin for their dismissal. Khmelnov was suspected of having illegally procured apartments in Vladivostok for himself and his family . He was then replaced by Admiral Kurojedow in 1997 and retired in 1998.

Khmelnov lives in Moscow . In 2012 he was chairman of the board of directors of a bank and chairman of the coordination council for naval veterans.
