Iida Yoshikuni

Iida Yoshikuni ( Japanese 飯 田 善 国 ; born July 10, 1923 in Ashikaga , † April 19, 2006 in Matsumoto ) was a Japanese painter and sculptor . Iida was married to the Austrian Katharina Breitl from the house of the poet Richard Breitl .

Yoshikuni Iida was born in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture in 1923 . He studied art history at the renowned private university Keio in Tokyo and graduated in 1949. This was followed by studying oil painting under Umehara Ryūsaburō at the likewise prestigious state Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku . After graduating in 1953, Iida had his first exhibition at the Maruzen Gallery in Tokyo.

In 1953 Iida became a member of the Atarashiki Mura ("New Village") association of Mushanokōji Saneatsu . In 1954 he began the cycle “Nocturnal sights” and joined the “Artists' Association of Eight” (八 人 の 会, Hachinin no kai).

In 1956 Iida traveled to Europe , where he worked in Rome , Vienna and West Berlin . He cultivated a close friendship with the Frankfurt sculptor Hans Steinbrenner . During his stay in Europe, Iida switched from painting to the fine arts. In 1966 he was a guest in that section of the Berlin artist program .

In 1968 he returned to Japan via Canada and the USA , where he became one of the most important sculptors of abstract art during his stay abroad.

Numerous exhibitions in Japan and abroad followed, including London , New York and Frankfurt am Main . In 1983 Yoshikuni Iida became a professor of architecture at Hōsei University in Tokyo. Yoshikuni Iida died of heart failure in 2006 while traveling to Matsumoto .
