The Kiss of Tosca (original title: Il bacio di Tosca ) is a documentary film by the Swiss director Daniel Schmid from 1984 . He portrays residents of the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti in Milan , a retirement home for opera singers and musicians founded by Giuseppe Verdi .

background

Casa di Riposo per Musicisti, 2006

The Casa di Riposo per Musicisti , also called Casa Verdi , was donated by Giuseppe Verdi as a retirement home for opera singers and musicians. He financed the building, which was completed in 1899, and decreed that after his death the royalties for his works would benefit Casa Verdi until the expiry of the term of protection . The house opened after Verdi's death on October 10, 1902. He and his wife are buried in the building's crypt.

In 1984 Daniel Schmid filmed everyday life in the Casa Verdi for two months with his cameraman Renato Berta and let the residents talk about their lives. The film was a production by Marcel Hoehn and the Zurich company T&C Film.

criticism

  • Peter Hagmann wrote in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung: “There are few films that show such deep sympathy as Il Bacio di Tosca . Daniel Schmid approached the singers sensitively in his portrait of «Casa Verdi» (...) They recognized the filmmaker as one of their own - and Daniel Schmid actually had a very special affection for opera, especially bel canto. "

Others

Dustin Hoffman said Il Bacio di Tosca was an immediate inspiration for his 2012 film Quartet .
