The Ilhéu dos Pássaros ("bird island"; Creole : Djeu ) is a small uninhabited island of the group of the Ilhas do Barlavento of Cape Verde . It is located about 1.5 km north-northwest of Cape Ponta João Ribeiro off the coast of the island of São Vicente in front of the natural harbor of the city of Mindelo , Porto Grande . The island is the smallest and only uninhabited part of the city of Mindelo.

The island lies at 16.9097 ° N and 25.0113 ° W between the Cape Verde islands of São Vicente and Santo Antão . It is separated from the latter by the Canal de São Vicente . The bay of Mindelo is a volcanic caldera filled with sea ​​water . The rocky land is part of the rim of the crater of the Mindelo caldera. During the last Ice Age, the islands of São Vicente, Santo Antão, and Santa Luzia were a single landmass that was partially flooded when the ice thawed. The approximately 150 meters long and wide Ilhéu dos Pássaros has an area of ​​about 0.025 km², the highest point is 40 m. There is no water and only sparse grass cover. At the highest point is the Farol de D. Luís lighthouse , which shows the way to the port of Mindelo. It is connected by stairs to a lower lighthouse keeper's house.
