Porto Grande , officially Município de Porto Grande , is a small town in the Brazilian state of Amapá in the Região Norte . The place is around 100 km from the capital Macapá . The population was estimated to be 21,484 as of July 1, 2018. The inhabitants who live in the approximately 4428 km² (2016) large area are called Portograndenses (Portuguese portograndenses ). The population density was 3.8 in 2010 and 4.5 people per km² in 2017.

The landscape and biome are predominantly shaped by the Amazon rainforest . The climate is tropical according to the Köppen and Geiger Am / Af climate classification . The average temperature is 26.5 ° C. There is a lot of precipitation and few dry spells.

history

On May 1, 1992, the city was founded as an independent municipality by outsourcing from the then Ferreira Gomes district of the city of Macapá . The foundation became effective on January 1, 1993 after Elias de Freitas Trajano de Souza had been elected first mayor and a city council.

In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the assignment to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Oiapoque and the Região geográfica intermediária Oiapoque-Porto Grande .

City administration

Executive: In the local elections in 2016, José Maria Bessa de Oliveira, called Bessa , became city prefect (mayor) for the term from 2017 to 2020, who ran for the Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT). He was elected for the third time.
