Pracuúba , officially Município de Pracuúba , is a small town in the Brazilian state of Amapá in the Região Norte .

The place is around 287 km from the capital Macapá . The population was estimated on July 1, 2019 at 5120 inhabitants. The inhabitants, who live on the approximately 4949 km² (2017) area, are called Pracuubenser (Portuguese pracuubenses ). The population density in 2010 was 0.8 people per km².

geography

The landscape and biome are predominantly shaped by the Amazon rainforest . In addition to Pracuúba as the main town and district seat, there are smaller settlements such as Breu, Cujubim, Flexal, Pernambuco, Porto Franco, Ramal do Pracuúba, São Miguel and Tucunaré in the large municipal area. Surrounding municipalities are Amapá , Calçoene , Tartarugalzinho and Ferreira Gomes .

The climate is tropical according to the Köppen and Geiger Am climate classification . The average temperature is 26.6 ° C. There is a lot of precipitation and few dry spells.

history

As early as 1906, a small settlement had formed in the area of ​​the then Amapá municipality and later came to Tartarugalzinho , named after the tree species pracuubeira (family Dimorphandra ) that is common there . On May 1, 1992 the city was founded as an independent municipality by outsourcing from Tartarugalzinho.

In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the assignment to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Oiapoque and the Região geográfica intermediária Oiapoque-Porto Grande .

City administration

Executive: In the 2016 local elections , Belize Conceição became city prefect (mayor) for the 2017-2020 term of office for the Partido da República (PR). The legislature rests with a city council (Câmara Municipal) made up of nine elected city councilors (vereadores).

Standard of living

The human development index for cities, abbreviated HDI (Portuguese: IDH-M ), was at the very low value of 0.203 in 1991, at the low value of 0.440 in 2000, and at the mean value of 0.614 in 2010.

Part of the population lives from subsistence farming , the main industries are fish farming as well as cattle and buffalo farming. Around 50% of the residents are divided between the urban core and the extensive surrounding area.
