List of officials of the St. Johannis Monastery in Hamburg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list contains the officials of the Herwardeshude monastery before and the monastery of St. Johannis after the Reformation .

Herwardeshude Monastery before the Reformation

Before the Reformation, Herwardeshude Monastery was headed by the abbess , who was solely subordinate to the Archbishop of Hamburg-Bremen . Her deputy was the prioress . The provost was involved in the administration of the monastery property . He was elected by the convent and was subordinate to the abbess. The provost was supposed to do the business that the abbess was not allowed to do as a woman. He was also pastor and confessor to the nuns and spiritual judge.

In 1307 a hospital was established within the monastery and a foundation to support it. Later she served to support the monastery in general. Two out of four Hamburg mayors were appointed as heads (" provisores ") of the hospital and the foundation. Only the first two rulers have survived. They can be considered the predecessor of the cartridge after the Reformation. From 1482 after a failed reform, two cloister citizens were appointed as procurators for the management. They were chosen by the abbess. It was about Hamburg citizens and councilors.

The monitors there had a special relationship with the city of Hamburg . They represented the monastery in the handling of annuity transactions .

St. Johannis Monastery after the Reformation

After the Reformation , the St. Johannis Monastery was administered by the first two mayors of Hamburg (as patrons ), two monastery citizens (as headmasters) and the maiden Domina , who together formed the Great Convention . A monastery clerk and a monastery bailiff stood by their side to support them, but not entitled to vote.

After the provost, who was also entitled to secular business, ceased to exist, the procurators were replaced by the monastery clerk. He also had the protocol to keep the bills and mortgage books of the monastery, to inspect the border twice a year with the monastery bailiff and, in addition, to carry out orders for the monastery that were given to him by the management. He bought his job since the beginning of the 18th century for a significant sum and also made a deposit of 10,000 marks. His income consisted of: free official housing in the monastery, various fixed income and fees. Like the monastery bailiff, he had to regard it as a kind of annuity which he acquired by buying the position.

Since the end of the 16th century, the monastery bailiff's tasks were: to monitor the boundaries of the monastery area, to control the condition of the land, logging and hunting, and to maintain the land and waterways. He also had police power and had to collect the outstanding taxes from the farmers. He also bought the job at the beginning of the 18th century. He had to choose his apartment in Eppendorf or Eimsbüttel . His income consisted of money, fixed payments in kind and random income .

As a rule, all office holders performed their functions for life. So the end of the term of office is the date of death, except for

  • E = end of regular term of office as mayor
  • P = retirement
  • R = resignation (usually for reasons of age and health)
  • S = suspension
  • Councilor = The rulers resigned from 1621 when they were elected to the council
  • # = Reason unknown

The St. Johannis monastery exercised sovereignty over numerous villages, which in 1830 were subordinated to the sovereignty of the Geestlande and thus to direct Hamburg sovereignty. The later office holders are irrelevant for this. However, they are still mentioned here up to the status of 1884, the year in which they were used by Gaedechens et al. were published.
