Johann Schrötteringk

Johann Schrötteringk (born December 13, 1588 in Hamburg ; † October 2, 1676 there ) was a German merchant , councilor and mayor of Hamburg.

Origin and family

Schrötteringk was the eldest son of the senior elder in the parish of Sankt Petri , Jürgen Schrötteringk (1551-1631). The senior Diederich Schrötteringk (1597–1678) and the protonotary Hinrich Schrötteringk (1611–1686) were his half-brothers from his father's second marriage.

Johann Schrötteringk was married three times: first in 1614 with Anna Hartiges, daughter of Jürgen Hartiges, the second marriage in 1626 with Lucia Tonniessen and the third marriage in 1645 with Cecilia Varenholtz († 1662), who, after her marriage to the elder and councilor Albert Bekendorp († 1628) and the council syndicate Johann Garmers (1586–1638), also entered into their third marriage.

Of his children from his first marriage, Jürgen (1615–1667) became senior in the parish of Sankt Jacobi , Anna († 1676) married senior elder Peter Kentzler (1606–1662) and Margaretha (1619–1695) married senior senior Peter von Spreckelsen (1613– 1665). The children Lucia (1627–1654), who married the senior elder Hermann Rentzel (1612–1683), and Joachim (1641–1706), who was a lawyer and ducal Saxon-Gotha-Altenburg court advisor, come from the second marriage . Schrötteringk's third marriage remained childless.

Live and act

Schrötteringk continued his father's copper business after long journeys. He first sold Hungarian and from 1625 Swedish copper to Spain .

As a merchant and citizen of Hamburg, Schrötteringk took on various honorary positions . In 1616 he was elected by the Hamburg citizenship to the Bakenzoll, which was levied to secure the Elbe shipping, and in 1624 to the Admiralty Customs.

In 1627 he became a banco citizen at the Hamburger Bank , on March 18, 1629 Achtmann , 1630 provisional at the orphanage and 1631 Jurat at the main church Sankt Petri.

Schrötteringk was elected to the council on February 22nd, 1638, on the day of the Petri chair celebration. His term of office fell during the Thirty Years' War . King Christian IV of Denmark gathered troops in northern Germany in 1643 . The soldiers announced that they would celebrate Pentecost in Hamburg. The city of Hamburg felt threatened and on April 16, 1643 the council sent the council syndicus Broderus Pauli (1598–1680), as well as the councilors Diedrich Niebur (1585–1643) and Johann Schrötteringk, to Duke Friedrich III. from Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf to Schleswig , with the aim that this should prevent the Danish king from storming Hamburg. The Syndicus Pauli was then imprisoned by King Christian IV in Rendsburg . Now the Hamburg vigilante guard has been reinforced and the residents prepared for a siege of the city. But eight days before Pentecost, Duke Friedrich III met. met with ambassadors from the Hanseatic cities of Bremen , Lübeck , Lüneburg and Braunschweig at King Christian IV's in Glückstadt and negotiated the Danish intentions. Hamburg sent councilors Diedrich Niebur, Johann Schrötteringk, Peter Lütkens (1603–1670) and Johann Schlebusch (1607–1659) to provide support. The Danish king assured the city of Hamburg his mercy and declared that he would also abolish the Elbe tariff, which was levied in Glückstadt and which was a heavy burden on trade in Hamburg. However, this Elbe tariff was only lifted the following year after further negotiations in Itzehoe .

In 1663 Schrötteringk and Pauli traveled to Magdeburg , where they obtained favorable customs conditions for Hamburg ships.

In the election recess of 1663 it was stipulated: “One of the mayors should be a merchant who is well-informed and experienced in the trade and sea trade.” On April 15, 1667 Schrötteringk was elected the first of these commercial mayors. He took this office as the successor to Barthold Moller (1605–1667) and led it for almost ten years until his death. A mayor's penny was minted for his funeral in 1676 and distributed among the choir students. The preacher at the main church of Sankt Katharinen , Hinrich Elmenhorst (1632–1704), wrote a poem for the funeral. The family erected a memorial to the mayor with his biography in Hamburg Cathedral .
